The Humane Society of Northern Kentucky, Inc. was founded in 1993 as a non-profit charitable organization to prevent cruelty to animals, relieve suffering among animals, provide education about humane treatment of animals and promote spay/neuter programs. HSKY’s primary service area is a six-county region that includes Boone, Campbell, Gallatin, Grant, Kenton, and Pendleton counties.

HSKY is a 100% volunteer organization. It receives no government funding and is not affiliated with any national organization. Funding comes from private donations, grants, and several annual fundraising events. HSKY is governed by a Board of Directors charged with planning, funding and implementing programs and services offered by the organization.

The programs and services of HSKY are designed to address the various pieces of the animal overpopulation puzzle. Current programs and services include animal outreach, humane education, spay/neuter education and financial support, and public information on issues of pet care and humane treatment.

HSKY collaborates with other public, private, and non-profit organizations throughout the region, effectively increasing the collective impact on animal overpopulation.

Programs and services

Spay/Neuter Assistance Program [SNAP]

As part of its effort to end the pet overpopulation crisis, HSKY offers assistance to low-income families and individuals to spay or neuter their pets. Applications are available on our web site and on request from our office. Approved applicants receive a certificate, and nearly all local veterinarians accept HSKY certificates as partial payment. HSKY reimburses veterinarians $35 for neutering or spaying the approved applicant’s cat or dog. Over 400 HSKY certificates were redeemed in 2004, preventing thousands of unwanted litters over the next 24 months. While we celebrate the growth of SNAP, there are still too many pets in Northern Kentucky for too few homes; so HSKY continues to expand SNAP in 2005.

Humane Education

HSKY seeks to induce prosocial values and human/animal compassion. Our Humane Education program reaches Third Graders in Northern Kentucky. Now starting its second year, the program emulates the National Association for Humane and Environmental Education (NAHEE) model. This humane education model has proven effective in fostering humane attitudes and prosocial behavior. Get involved.
